Philosophy of Practice

The Four Pillars of Performance Game Plan
Honesty: Honesty builds a genuine and trusting relationship between the consultant and the client. When we promote honest feedback and transparent communication, clients feel safe to confront their mental barriers and participate in creating a customized game plan for growth. This openness identifies the core of any issues or necessary adjustments, rather than masking or hiding the types of interventions that will be most effective for the individual or team.
Empathy: Empathy ensures that the practitioner sees the client not just as a performer or athlete, but as a whole person with fears, motivations, and pressures. Our empathetic approach fosters a supportive environment, allowing athletes and performers to feel understood and validated creating higher levels of self-efficacy. This emotional connection lays the groundwork for meaningful behavioral reflection, and sustained mental resilience.
Confidentiality: Confidentiality is a legal protection that helps preserve trust, vulnerability, and privacy within sessions. Performance Game Plan LLC is required by California and Federal law to break this confidentiality and report to appropriate agencies (including parents if the client is a minor) in the circumstances that an individual indicates they are going to harm themselves or someone else, there are signs of child or elder abuse, or signs of animal abuse. We rigorously protect our clients. Knowing this, and signing an informed consent agreement, also creates an environment where clients maintain openness and honesty about mistakes, insecurities, and performance anxieties. This trust enables deeper work that leads to genuine growth and peak levels of performance.
Open-Minded Skepticism: Open-minded skepticism combines curiosity with critical thinking and questioning assumptions without shutting down new ideas. This pillar allows us to rigorously evaluate techniques (e.g., mental skills training, visualization, self-talk, progressive relaxation, etc.) while remaining receptive to innovative strategies tailored to each client and team. This balance helps ensure interventions are both evidence-based and personalized, optimizing performance outcomes. A healthy level of skepticism is vital because it encourages athletes to test, question, and feel whether the sport psychology strategies are genuinely effective for them. When clients look for measurable changes in their own performance and internal experience, they develop greater trust in the mental skills that work and quickly identify those that don’t. This reflective process is crucial for building a customized Performance Game Plan that is truly individualized, efficient, and impactful.
